RESIDENTIAL
Designing a space for families and friends to find connection, joy, rest, comfort among many other things is special work. What each home needs is deeply personal and unique to those living there, and engaging in a process of uncovering what the “perfect home” looks like to each person or family is so important to really understanding the goals and vision for each unique home.
South Sound Residence
Designed as an efficient secondary dwelling on a 1.86 acre lot in the South Sound, this home was conceived to give peace, quiet and connection with the surrounding site. A study in simplicity, the living space is all on the second floor, elevated to give separation from the garage / workspace as well as provide better views of the water.

Tacoma Residence
Housing accessibility is a significant issue in the Pacific Northwest, and while individual homeowners are a key part to solving the issue, a project it has to be very appealing to increase the housing availability in your home. This project is a strong example of how to design a home that meets the client’s needs as well as benefits the neighborhood and city fabric.
The Tacoma Residence project is a development under the jurisdiction’s densification pilot program. The project is on an existing residential lot with an early 20th century home in Central Tacoma. We are maintaining the existing home with a full remodel that will include two rental units and adding a new owner-occupied single-family home in the rear yard. The new home is nestled into the available space to create a private retreat. Using massing, sloped roofs and plantings, the energy of the home is centered around the indoor/outdoor living space, blending the lines between the indoor and outdoor in order to enjoy the full use of the space year round.

San Mateo Residence
This residential remodel was designed to be the “forever home” for an executive couple looking toward their retirement years. Downsizing from a much larger house, this 3 bedroom, 2 bath remodel is a study in efficiency to create spaces that are comfortable and uncompromising within a more environmentally friendly footprint.
With the climate of San Mateo being so consistent, the backyard was a high priority. In placing the bedrooms at the front of the house, we were able to fully open up the kitchen and living spaces to the expansive back deck and hot tub, creating an indoor/outdoor space that can flex from small indoor gatherings to large garden parties in minutes. In order to leverage San Mateo housing code, the existing large garage was also remodeled into a smaller garage with a detached accessory dwelling unit able to be used for short / long term rentals as well as a guest house as needed.

The Renner Abode
This is Melissa’s family home. We are taking it space by space to make it ours. More of a tailoring than a remodel, the bones are staying more or less as they are. We’re working with color, furniture, lighting, and mementos to make it ours.
The living room is wide and anchored by the windows with a peak-a-boo view of the Cascades. The sectional in the corner was a must, both for our family as “shared blanket book reading” as well as creating definition for a space that is otherwise a fairly open plan. In designing and building our own coffee table and record storage bench, the pieces are sized to fill the space and complete the overall layout.
